Drexel’s sophomore intern Lawrence Jones created a program for Philadelphia Children’s Foundation called career clubs. Career clubs is a monthly after school program organized by PCF, and held at Philadelphia’s high schools once a month for five months, January- May. This program was designed to teach students the importance of preparing for jobs and college, developing skills such as: resume writing, interviewing skills, leadership development, and steps for applying to a job or college.
Those who will be facilitating this program, are faculty sponsors, volunteers. The program will be extended to approximately 20-30 students per school. The sponsor of the club will outreach to the students, as well as teachers telling the students, announcements, and of course, word of mouth. This program will be held at the school, and will be held during after school hours once a month, with the dates to be determined by each club.
The reason why this program was designed, was because many students lack access to the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed after high school whether they chose the path of college, or the workforce. Career club will teach the students these skills and more, free of cost. This is something we as an organization want students to be able to participate in, since it is so beneficial.
Career clubs is started in conjunction with a faculty sponsor, who will be responsible for recruiting student participants and attending every session. If necessary, PCF will provide additional program facilitators to assist the faculty sponsor.
There will be five sessions involved in this program, each approximately 1.5 hours in length. The first session will discuss having the right mindset for college, and resources for financial aid. The second session is dedicated to resume writing skills, important and relevant for those interested in going straight into the work force, or college. The third session will address interviewing skills and appropriate dress for interviews. The fourth session involves discussions on leadership development, and the final session is a general wrap up of the program, and will discuss the next steps for career club students.
