Community Women’s Education Project helps low income women in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods with life skills, sustaining wage for families, and continuing education.

Summary:
The adult education program at the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped has a program designed for individuals who are blind and visually impaired the physically handicapped and those with learning disabilities. All material provided are in alternative formats such as Braille, audiocassettes, and large print. About 70 adults are in the program and 400 have earned their GED through this service.

The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy was the 1st adult literacy agency in the country to be established by a local governing body. The MCOL was established to ensure that quality education is available to equip all adults with skills such as workforce, parenting, and community life. Services offered by MCOL are CareerLink Information and Referral, Family Literacy Project, Philadelphia Professional Development Center, and Move Up Philadelphia for TANF recipients seeking education services.

Summary:
PEP’s adult literacy programs are a year round and serve students who need to improve their low literacy skills to seek employment. There are three types of classes offered such as Adult Basic Education Night School for people with developmental disabilities, Community Adult Basic for those people without developmental disabilities, and Move Up program for TANF recipients seeking job training skills and furthering their education.

Summary:
Temple’s Adult Literacy and GED Programs offer preparation for taking the GED test. While enrolled in the classes, students will receive instruction in reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics. Prior to attending classes each registrant is required to take a mandatory placement test to ensure that you are placed in the appropriate classes.

YMCA Adult Education Center offers literacy, adult education, family literacy, and workforce development.
