Bike Safety Tips
Biking has long been a part of the American tradition as a fun and easy way to get around. The appeal of bicycling rises in the warmer months when we all have a little more free time and want to spend it outdoors. However, biking is a serious ordeal. Emergency rooms see thousands of injuries from bike accidents every year. To keep yourself safe, keep some of these tips in mind. The most important element of bike safety that both parents and kids should know is the importance of wearing a helmet. Since most bike accidents often involve head injuries wearing a helmet is the first step in bike safety. For children age twelve and under, wearing a helmet is the law punishable by a citation and fine. When choosing a helmet, you should to make sure your helmet fits properly. It should cover your forehead and the strap should always be buckled when you ride. You should be able to fit your finger under the strap but make sure your helmet is not so lose that it moves around when you move your head from side to side. Your helmet and clothes should be bright colors so that you are more visible to other drivers. Your bike should be equipped with reflectors and, if you are riding in the dark, lights on the front and back. Make sure you keep your bike in good condition to avoid an accident. Keep your tires inflated and check your chain and brakes regularly. If you are riding on the road with other cars, be sure to follow all the traffic laws. It is important to stop at all intersections and signal to other drivers when making a turn. A safe biker always rides single file with traffic, never against it. When possible, use bike paths. Don’t be afraid to communicate with other bikers on the road. Let them know when you are passing them so as not to cause an accident. Be aware of your surroundings while biking. Wet pavement, gravel on the road, or sand could make your lose control of your bike. Bike safety techniques are not meant to take away from the fun of biking; rather they are there to ensure that you can get the most out of your bike. Be safe and enjoy your bike this summer!
