Careers in Debating

Debating techniques are highly conducive to a variety of professional careers. The most competitive debaters develop critical thinking and reasoning abilities, oral communication skills, and leadership competency, all of which are assets in law, consultancy, politics, public affairs, advocacy, and even business.

Debaters do not know which side of the issues they will advocate during the tournament, until just minutes prior to their round. With limited preparation time, debaters must develop a concise, persuasive argument on the spot, and deliver it confidently. Attorneys take on a similar process in court, and face the same pressures when arguing a client’s case before a judge or jury.

Presidential debates enable candidates to deliver their political platforms, positions, and issues to the American public. Conversely, these debates enable the public to assess the candidates in light of their debating skills. The most qualified candidates are able to think quickly, maintain their composure, and speak eloquently on any topic.

Debating abilities are critical to being a successful leader in any field. Business CEOs in particular find that prior experience in debate enhances job performance. Key debating skills are instrumental in the business field. They include the ability to think quickly, presentation techniques, and knowledge of researching a topic with opposing viewpoints. The pressure of working under time constraints is another debating skill that applies to a career in business, as clients often give CEOs a limited time frame to sell their product.

Debate is therefore an excellent way to develop a set of fundamental career skills. We should urge more young people to join a debate team, as the experience will undoubtedly serve them well in the future.
