Scheie Eye Institute is the Department of Ophthalmology for the University of Pennsylvania Health System and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Scheie Eye Institute is dedicated to:

  • excellence in patient care
  • education of future clinical ophthalmologists and vision scientists
  • community eye care needs through outreach
  • advancing the frontier of research to prevent blindness and vision loss

At Scheie's F.M. Kirby Center for Molecular Ophthalmology, scientists investigate the causes of important eye conditions including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, hereditary retinal degenerations, cataract and severe myopia that may be treatable with molecular therapies.

Scheie is a world leader in research on retinal degenerations, especially age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and is consistently in the top five in the nation in funding by the National Eye Institute.
